Applications are now open for the 2025 Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards. Continental Reinsurance Plc, a leading Pan-African reinsurer, is proud to announce the launch of the 10th edition of the Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards (2025), marking a decade of recognizing journalistic talent and excellence within the re/insurance industry.

The longest-running award program dedicated to excellence in re/insurance journalism across Africa is now open for entries. These prestigious awards celebrate the critical efforts of journalists who highlight key issues and developments in the insurance industry across the continent. The awards are open to print, online and broadcast journalists from across Africa who have published articles or features related to insurance and reinsurance in English, French, and Arabic languages.

Categories

The categories in the 2025 awards are:

  • Best Re/Insurance Print Article English
  • Best Re/Insurance Online Article English
  • Best Re/Insurance Broadcast Article English
  • Best Re/Insurance French Entry Print, Broadcast or Online
  •  Best Re/Insurance Arabic Entry
  • Print, Broadcast or Online
Selection Process:

An international judging panel comprising industry experts and academics in journalism will review and select the winner entries.

The judging panel will evaluate all submitted material according to the quality of information and how it contributes to creating a better understanding of the benefits insurance can deliver to individuals, communities and societies at large.

Submission Procedure:

  • Submission can be either a published article – print, online or broadcast (radio/television clip) in English, French or Arabic.
  • Only one article can be entered for each category.
  • Entrants must be journalists based in any African country.
  • The review period of the entries is 12 months leading up to the submission deadline date.
Guidelines for Award Recipients
  • Award recipients are recognised at the Awards Ceremony to be held alongside an industry event and will receive a complimentary invitation to the event (health and government restrictions permitting). The cost of travel and hotel accommodation will be borne by Continental Re.
  • The names and photos of the award recipients and the awards that they have won will be published in Continental Re’s literature and online channels to celebrate the achievements of the award winners.
  • Recipients may use their award titles for their own professional development.

Equator Prize 2021 theme: Solving our Planetary Crisis

The Equator Initiative is a United Nations-led partnership that brings together governments, civil society, grassroots organizations, and businesses to foster resilient communities by recognizing and advancing local nature-based solutions for sustainable development. The Equator Initiative creates opportunities and platforms to share knowledge and good practices, develops capacities of local communities and Indigenous peoples, informs policy through convening multi-stakeholder dialogues, and fosters enabling environments to replicate and scale up community action.

The Equator Prize 2021 will be awarded to outstanding local community and Indigenous peoples initiatives that advance innovative nature-based solutions for sustainable development. The winners will join a prestigious network of 255 leading community-based organizations from 83 countries that have been awarded the Equator Prize since 2002. Each Equator Prize winner will receive USD 10,000 and will be supported to participate in a series of policy dialogues and special events in the fall of 2021.

This year’s Equator Prize will recognize innovative initiatives from local communities and Indigenous peoples that demonstrate exceptional achievements in nature-based solutions for local sustainable development. Winning initiatives will be honored for their successes in protecting, restoring and/or sustainably managing biodiversity for positive development outcomes. Thematic priorities include:

  • Action on Sustainable Food Systems

Protection, restoration and/or sustainable management of natural and agricultural ecosystems for food security.

  • Action on Climate

Protection, restoration and/or sustainable management of ecosystems that help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and/or help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.

  • Action on Nature and Green Economy

Protection, restoration and/or sustainable management of terrestrial or marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and/or wildlife that enables sustainable and green livelihoods, enterprises, and jobs, including Indigenous economies.

Special consideration will be given to nominees working on ecosystem integrity and intactness, water security, disaster risk reduction, advocacy for land and water rights, social and environmental justice, and gender equality.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Equator Prize 2021:

  • The initiative must have been in existence for at least three years, and/or the actions taken must have been in place for at least three years.
  • The nominee must be either a local community-based initiative, operating in a rural area, based in a country receiving support from the United Nations Development Programme (for a list of eligible countries, please click here); or an initiative led by Indigenous peoples in any country, operating in a rural area.
  • The actions taken by the nominee must be nature-based, and must deliver benefits related to two or more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Selection Criteria

Equator Prize 2021 winners will be selected by an independent Technical Advisory Committee, which will assess nominations based on the following criteria:

  • Impact: The extent to which the nominated initiative has resulted in measurable and positive environmental, social and economic impacts that deliver benefits towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Innovation: The extent to which the nominated initiative demonstrates new approaches and models that overcome prevailing constraints, and could offer fundamentally new approaches to adapting to and/or mitigating climate change, while advancing local sustainable development;
  • Scalability and/or replicability: The extent to which the nominated initiative could be scaled up sub-nationally or nationally and/or, the extent to which the initiative can be replicated within the country and beyond;
  • Resilience, Adaptability, and Self-Sufficiency: The extent to which the nominated initiative demonstrates adaptability to environmental, social and economic change, resilience in the face of external pressures, and improved capacity for local self-sufficiency;
  • Reduced inequalities: The extent to which the initiative reduces inequalities in income as well as those based on age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status, in particular for the poor;
  • Social Inclusion: The extent to which the nominated initiative includes youth, elders, indigenous peoples, and other diverse groups in the decision-making processes and the actions that affect them;
  • Gender Equality: The extent to which the nominated initiative promotes the equality and empowerment of women and girls.

2021 UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in Basic Sciences

The UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences aims to promote and honour excellence in the basic sciences, defined to include the disciplines of chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology, the foundation on which scientific knowledge can be propagated and which are fundamental to the advancement of innovation and sustainable development.

UNESCO invites the governments of Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, the non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the Prize, the UNESCO Chairs, the Category 2 Centres, the international scientific unions and universities to propose individual candidates for the 2021 edition of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences.

Awarded every year to two prize-winners, its purpose is to reward individuals for their major achievements in terms of development, diffusion, and international cooperation in the basic sciences, which had a significant transformational impact on a regional or global scale. Each of the two individual prize-winners will receive a financial award of USD 250,000 as well as a gold medal and a diploma.

No self-nomination shall be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

The Prize is awarded to candidates whose scientific achievements are conducive to socio-economic transformation and impact development on a regional or global scale, based on:

  • Excellence in research in the fields of basic sciences;
  • Basic sciences education and popularization;
  • International or regional cooperation in the basic sciences.

There is no age limit for the candidates.

Candidatures of women scientists are encouraged.

Who can submit nominations?

The nominations can be submitted by the following entities:

No self-nomination shall be considered.

How to submit nominations?

Nominations can only be submitted electronically through an online dedicated template.

Please register(link is external) and consult the Rules and Regulations before filling in the template.

Nominations must be completed in full in English or French.

The deadline for the 2021 edition is Monday 15 March 2021.

Nominations that are incomplete or received after the deadline shall not be considered.

Selection process

The International Mendeleev Prize’s Team reviews all applications received before the deadline and transmits the eligible applications to the Jury of the Prize.

The Jury meets once a year to assess the applications.

The Director-General selects the winners based on the assessment and recommendation of the Jury of the Prize.

The Prize shall be awarded by the Director-General or her representative to the individual winners during an official ceremony held for that purpose in alternation at UNESCO’s premises at Headquarters and in the Russian Federation.

Call for Nominations : The Roux Prize 2021 for health innovation ($100,000 Prize)

The Roux Prize is intended for anyone who has used health evidence in innovative ways to improve the health of the population. The Roux Prize welcome diverse entries: winners might be workers within government agencies, researchers at academic institutions, volunteers in charitable organizations, or health providers working in the community.

Each year, the winner receives $100,000 that can be put toward anything that the winner wishes. Past recipients have used their winnings to fund academic scholarships, their research, or their own life’s causes. 

Information included in the nomination form:

  • Nominee’s personal information: title, name, degrees, position or role, organization, email, phone number, and physical address.
  • Nomination statement (1000 word limit): The nomination statement should express why you feel this candidate is deserving of the Roux Prize. The strongest nominations will be those which:
    • Describe the scope and relevance of the problem addressed by the nominee.
    • Describe how the candidate used evidence to improve population health. Please include specific examples that highlight the importance of the evidence for achieving the outcome, and highlight the breadth and significance of the impact on the population.
    • Describe the nominee and the context in which they performed their work, including any barriers or obstacles they had to overcome to achieve the outcome.
    • Describe any innovations the nominee implemented in their use of evidence.
    • Describe how the prize would benefit the nominee.
    • Optional: Supporting materials. You may provide any documents which provide evidence of the nominee’s achievements and in particular highlight how the nominee used evidence to improve population health and/or the magnitude and relevance of the impact of the nominee’s work. These could include peer-reviewed articles, media publications, letters of support, etc. (5 maximum)
  • Nominator’s personal information: title, name, degrees, position or role, organization, email, phone number, and physical address.
    • Optional: Co-nominator personal information: title, name, degrees, position or role, organization, email, phone number, and physical address.

The selection process: The winner of the Roux Prize is selected in two rounds. First, the Roux Prize Nomination Committee – comprised of distinguished individuals in population health research, policy, and practice – reviews all nominations and selects the finalists. Then, the finalists are reviewed and a winner is selected by the Roux Prize Nomination Board.

Eligibility: 

Nominations are welcomed from across the globe. Preference is given to individuals, but groups are eligible. Self-nominations are discouraged. Current full-time faculty, fellows, or employees of IHME and the University of Washington are not eligible.

Conditions:

  • Upon notification, the award must be accepted by the recipient within a term decided by IHME, and be received by the recipient at the Roux Prize Awards Ceremony in 2021.
  • The prize is valued at $100,000 USD and is for the personal use of the recipients. An award citation and a medal will also be presented. 
  • If a group, rather than an individual, receives the award, the prize will be evenly divided among them. Each will receive an award citation and medal. 
  • Awards are made to residents of any country without restriction of gender, race, religion, creed, or nationality. 
  • All selections are final and are not subject to review or challenge.
  • Nominations for 2021 should be received no later than February 28, 2021. Nominations received after this date will be considered the following year. 
  • The winner will be announced prior to the award ceremony in 2021.

Award: 

The $100,000 Roux Prize is awarded annually by the nomination process described above.

The  United Nations Public Service Awards is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service.

The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector. Since the first Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has received an increasing number of submissions from all around the world.


The 2021 United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) is now open for nominations in the following categories:

  1. Fostering innovation to deliver inclusive and equitable services for all including through digital transformation
  2. Enhancing the effectiveness of public institutions to reach the SDGs
  3. Promoting gender-responsive public services to achieve the SDGs
  4. Institutional preparedness and response in times of crisis

The UNPSA is an annual Awards programme that recognizes excellence in public service at the local, regional and national levels. It promotes and rewards innovations and excellence in public service in support of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the principle of leaving no one behind. Public institutions at the subnational and national levels of all UN Member States are eligible to apply. In the case of public-private partnerships, the lead candidate must be a public sector institution.

2018 TWAS Young Affiliates program for researchers from developing nations

The World Academy of Sciences Regional Office for sub-Saharan Africa (TWAS-ROSSA) invites you to nominate suitable candidates for the 2018 TWAS Young Affiliates. The honour is given to researchers from developing nations who have at least 10 international publications.

The nominees should show potential for a high-impact career. During their five-year tenure, Young Affiliates build networks with other affiliates and with elected TWAS Fellows. They also attend international conferences such as the TWAS General Meeting where they make contributions and are exposed to mentoring as well as collaboration opportunities. The five selected TWAS Young Affiliates will also be part of and work closely with the TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN) which was established in 2016 during the 27th TWAS General Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.

Requirements:

  • Nominations are invited from TWAS and AAS fellows, Members of National Academies and fellows, Members of National Young Academies of Science, Research Institutions, Research Councils, Universities, Government entities and other such bodies that have or know this talent in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Nominations of female and young scientists from Science and Technological Lagging Countries is highly encouraged.

The Aspen Institute’s New Voices Fellowship is a year-long media skills, communication and leadership program designed for standout development professionals from the developing world. Candidates for the Fellowship are expected to have both a record of significant professional achievement and a desire to share their perspectives on global development with a broader international audience. The Fellowship is open by nomination only.

Fellowship Worth

  • While the fellowship is non-resident and not full-time, it does require a significant and sustained time commitment as fellows write opinion articles, participate in interviews with local and international media, and speak at international conferences.
  • All expenses related to the fellowship are paid, including certain media-related travel costs.

Nomination Process:

  • Ask someone to nominate you. This person could be a mentor, supervisor or professor. Aspen Institute would ask that this person know you and your work well.
  • Aspen Institute will review your nomination. If you pass through the first round, we’ll be in touch with you directly, asking you to submit an application. This application involves two essays and a series of questions.
  • Once the New Voices team has reviewed applications, we will ask a small group of finalists to participate in an interview via Skype or phone. From this group, Aspen will choose the final class of Fellows.

Timeline:

  • The nomination period will close on November 1, 2015 and the incoming class will be announced in January 2016.

2015 One Africa Award ($USD 100,000 for Millennium Development Goals Driven Projects)

As the world prepares to adopt the new set of development goals, the ONE Campaign invites civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations and other groups based in Africa to apply for the $ 100,000 (USD) 2015 ONE Africa Award.

Eligible organizations include those that can demonstrate commitment and success in their advocacy to promote the attainment of one or more of the Millennium Development Goals.

The 2015 ONE Award provides a bridge between previous efforts geared towards MDGs and future efforts to contribute to the new development agenda enshrined in what will be called Sustainable Development Goals, by 2030.

The ONE Africa Award aims to recognize, reward, and advance the exceptional work of organizations, founded by Africans and based in Africa, dedicated to helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The $100,000 award will bring recognition to innovative African efforts to fight poverty and will incentivize more of such efforts.

Each year, The ONE Campaign awards the prize of $100,000 which is underwritten by an endowment from The Howard G. Buffet Foundation to recognize, advance and reward the exceptional work of an African organization that works toward the achievement of one or more of the Millennium Development Goals. The award is in its eighth year running.

Eligibility Criteria:

Award recipients can be exceptional organisations and other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through innovative advocacy based programs.

  • Qualified recipients may be engaged in direct services to achieve any of the MDGs but must demonstrate a strong advocacy component integral to the delivery and success of their programs.
  •  Qualified recipients may be advocacy/pressure groups and think tanks engaged in governance activities such as the monitoring of flows of resources and/or holding governments accountable to commitments to MDG attainment.
  • Award recipients can be exceptional organizations and other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the MDGs through innovative advocacy based programs.

Categories

Organizations will be graded in 5 categories and will be awarded between 1-10 points ineach of these categories:

i. Extent to which the organization has designed and implemented an innovative advocacy program that employs new approaches to impact in a given sector(s).

ii. Ability to demonstrate and communicate specific indicators of progress and impact linking work to a given sector(s) in a clear results-oriented framework.

iii. Demonstration of the ability to replicate efforts of the organization to take intervention to scale.

iv. Demonstration of strong internal and constituency accountability mechanisms (i.e. community leadership consultations and involvement in programs to demonstrate the interventions are relevant to the majority of the poor in the target community and empowers them in a sustainable way) along with transparency of operations.

v. Extent to which the organization has employed creative partnerships to achieve its goal(s) and ensure coordination with other development actors. These partnerships may include public and/or private sector players.

Do you know a young person making a positive difference in your community or country?

Nominations are open for the 2016 Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work. These awards recognise inspiring young people whose development work has had a significant impact on people and communities in their country or region.

Young people aged 15 to 29 years can apply for the awards, which celebrate the achievements of those who lead initiatives to enhance democracy and development, from poverty alleviation to climate change, to peace building.

A total of 16 finalists will be shortlisted from four Commonwealth regional categories: Africa and Europe, Asia, Americas and Caribbean, and Pacific.

Criteria for nomination

Individuals are able to nominate themselves or can be nominated by someone who is able to vouch for the legitimacy of the nominee’s development work. The nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee must have been engaged in their development work for more than 12 months either in a professional or voluntary capacity
  • The nominee must be from a Commonwealth member country
  • The development work must be ongoing and in a Commonwealth member country
  • The nominee should not be older than 29 on 31 December 2016
  • Nominees should give permission for their names to be put forward (if nominated by someone else).
  • Award winners and finalists must agree to take part in publicity and activities generated by the Commonwealth.
  • The development work can be within any number of areas, including agriculture, skills training, arts and culture, environment protection, education, health and well-being, human rights, information and communications technology, journalism and many more areas including sport, science and sustainability.

Benefits:

  • A winner will be selected from each region, and invited to London, United Kingdom, in early 2016 for a formal awards presentation.
  • In addition to four regional award winners, one exceptional entrant will be recognised as Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2016 for Excellence in Development Work.
  • The finalists will receive cash grants of GBP£1,000 to continue their development work, and will each be awarded a trophy and certificate.
  • Each regional winner will receive a cash grant of GBP£3,000, while the Commonwealth Young Person of the Year will receive GBP£5,000 to support an ongoing project or initiative.

Nomination Process:

Complete the online nomination form to submit a nomination.

You will be required to provide:

  • Details about yourself
  • Details about the person you are nominating (if nominating someone)
  • The reasons you think the nominee (or you, if you are nominating yourself) deserves to win
  • A description of the development work and how it makes a positive difference to the lives of others.

Awards will be decided on the basis of:

  • Quality of impact
  • Level of innovation/fresh approaches to problem-solving
  • Quality of achievement
  • Quality of the evidence provided
  • Sustainability: building capacity of future generations to meet their own needs.
The Commonwealth Youth Award for Excellence in Development Work is funded by the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Recognizing leaders and organizations using the power of technology to drive change

ITU and UN Women are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2015 GEM TECH Awards.

2015 is an important year for the global community. We are celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action [link] and for this year’s awards, will look to efforts that have used ICTs to realize progress in its implementation. In 2015, we are also putting in place a new global framework on sustainable development for the next 15 years.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a central goal and ICTs have been recognized as a key means of implementation.

The GEM TECH awards can play an important role in highlighting what works and where initiatives can be scaled and further investments made. Moreover, they showcase the tremendous talent and determination of women to ensure that technology and its application are relevant and responsive to their needs.

Categories:

  • Application of Technology for Women’s Empowerment: Recognizing applications of technology across all sectors, and particularly the pillars of the Beijing Platform for Action, for the empowerment of women and to achieve gender equality
  • Women in the Technology Sector: Recognizing success in the promotion of girls and women as creators, drivers, leaders and decision-makers in the technology sector
  • Gender-Responsive Technology Governance, Policy and Access: Recognizing efforts to bridge the gender digital divide through strategies, policies and regulations that ensure enabling and foundational factors such as access, connectivity, security, digital literacy and citizenship.

Eligible Stakeholders:

  • Please nominate yourself or others – individuals, civil society, public sector, UN system and international organizations, private sector – who have done exceptional work in the area.

Nomination:

  • ITU and UN Women encourage men and women working in the ICT sector to nominate their colleagues – or themselves – with the final three winners to be selected by a committee of experts from ITU, UN Women, and 2014 GEM-Tech winners.

In recognition of young women scientists from scientifically lagging developing countries who have made significant contributions to science.

The Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World are designed to recognize and highlight the achievements of women scientists working and living in developing countries who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge.

Each year a total of five winners are selected, one from each of the following regions: Latin America and the Caribbean; East and South-East Asia and the Pacific; Arab region; Central and South Asia; Sub-Saharan Africa (see complete list of countries below).
The awards are assigned in the following fields :
2016: Biological Sciences: agriculture, biology and medicine
2017: Engineering Sciences: engineering, innovation and technology
2018: Physical Sciences: chemistry, maths and physics

 

ELIGIBILITY
Nominees must have received their PhD within the previous 10 years and be a female scientist living and working for 3 years immediately prior to the nomination in one of the following developing countries:

Benefits

  • The winning women of the 2016 edition will be celebrated for their research excellence.
  • Each winner will receive USD 5,000, generously contributed by the Elsevier Foundation and all-expenses-paid attendance at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in February 2016 in Washington, D.C., USA, where the awards ceremony will take place.
  • The ceremony and conference provide invaluable networking opportunities for the candidates.

Winners may also be asked to act as mentors to selected young women scientists undertaking PhD scholarships through the OWSD South-South PhD programme, and will receive training in this regard.

Nominations are invited from senior academics in the relevant fields, e.g. members of national science academies, OWSD members, TWAS Fellows, ICTP visiting scientists and staff, heads of departments, heads of universities, etc.

Self-nominations or nominations by selection committee members are not accepted.

The Aspen Institute seeks nominations for one-year non-resident media skills and coaching program for next generation of global development leaders from the developing world

The Aspen Institute’s New Voices Fellowship is a year-long media skills, communication and leadership program designed for standout development professionals from the developing world. Candidates for the Fellowship are expected to have both a record of significant professional achievement and a desire to share their perspectives on global development with a broader international audience. The Fellowship is open by nomination only.

The Aspen Institute’s New Voices Fellowship initiative, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, offers development experts from Africa and other parts of the developing world a year-long program of media support, training, research, and writing under the guidance of experienced mentors and trainers.

The Fellowship:

  • While the fellowship is non-resident and not full-time, it does require a significant and sustained time commitment as fellows write opinion articles, participate in interviews with local and international media, and speak at international conferences.
  • All expenses related to the fellowship are paid, including certain media-related travel costs.
  • Candidates for the 12 Fellowships awarded each year must be experts in fields relating to global development, ranging from global health and food security to governance, education and social entrepreneurship. Fellows must be from a developing country, and ideally work and live in their country of origin or another developing country.
  • Over the course of a year, the Fellowship works to prepare and support Fellows to become recognized thought leaders, helping amplify their insights and ideas rooted in experience on the ground.
  • They will be given training and support to speak at major events; write conversation-starting op-eds and think pieces for major outlets; and create social media platforms.
  • The Fellowship is non-resident, but includes travel to training workshops as well as opportunities for travel to select international conferences.

Nomination Process:

  • Ask someone to nominate you. This person could be a mentor, supervisor or professor. We ask that this person know you and your work well.
  • Aspen Institute will review your nomination. If you pass through the first round, Aspen Institute will  be in touch with you directly, asking you to submit an application.This application involves two essays and a series of questions.
  • Once the New Voices team has reviewed applications, we will ask a small group of finalists to participate in an interview via Skype or phone. From this group, we will choose the final class of Fellows.

Originally established in 2007 by the Legatum Group, the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship are now hosted by the African Leadership Network (ALN). ALN believes that the surest way for Africa to create prosperity is through entrepreneurship. In line with this, ALN hopes to inspire as many Africans as possible to pursue the path of entrepreneurship through the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship.

The Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship recognize and award exceptional entrepreneurial leaders who serve as role models to Africa’s aspiring entrepreneurs and demonstrate business excellence, innovation and profitability.

Since its inception, AAE has attracted more than 7,000 applications from African businesses and awarded prizes of over USD 1.5 million to 30 leading companies.

The AAE’s objectives are to:

  • Create a platform to spotlight and celebrate business excellence in Africa
  • Build a strong network of African entrepreneurs as role models and a source of best practice
  • Promote entrepreneurship as a driving force for Africa’s prosperity

There are five award categories which recognize entrepreneurs at different stages of the entrepreneurial cycle.

  • TRANSFORMATIONAL BUSINESS AWARD – Awarded to a notable business leader who has created significant socio-economic impact in Africa by building a business with revenues greater than USD 50 million
  • OUTSTANDING MATURE BUSINESS AWARD – A USD 100,000 prize to a business leader who has built a company with revenues between US$ 5 million and US$ 50 million
  • OUTSTANDING SMALL AND GROWING BUSINESS AWARD – A USD 50,000 prize to a young remarkable African business with revenues between USD 500,000 and USD 5 million
  • OUTSTANDING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR AWARD (NEW) – A USD 50,000 prize awarded to an organization that demonstrates outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship while sustainably addressing the socioeconomic development of low-income communities in Africa. To be eligible, the organisation, which may be structured as a non-profit or for-profit must: have been founded or be currently run by an African citizen; demonstrate annual revenues of between USD 150,000 and USD 2.5 million in the last financial year; and be primarily focused on social return.

Eligibility

The Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship 2013 is open to Africa-based entrepreneurs with firms that are fully registered in the continent and that:

  • Have revenues of over USD 150,000 for social entrepreneurs and over USD 500,000 for all other categories
  • Have been profitable for the last two consecutive years
  • Are independent, that is, not a subsidiary of a foreign entity
  • Are free of legal actions

Selection Process

Nominees will be selected through a rigorous and transparent selection process. A team of business analysts, auditors and market and sector experts will review and shortlist the most outstanding nominations across each of the five categories.
The Finalists will be judged by an international panel of leading business experts through interviews and comprehensive reviews of company reports based on the following criteria:

  • Sustainability and innovation
  • Profitability and growth
  • Long-term business strategy
  • Leadership, culture and values
  • Investment in employees
  • Social and economic impact on communities

No financial data on the selected companies will be divulged without the companies’ consent. The decisions of AAE with respect to all aspects of the selection process are final and binding on all applicants without the right to appeal.

The third edition of the UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers has opened the call for nominations.

The prize is awarded every two years and it recognizes initiatives that contribute to improving educational practices around the world, with priority given to developing countries and to marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

The Prize of $270 000 will be divided between three winners.

Who is eligible?
Candidates may be organizations, international or national non-governmental organizations (NGOs), institutions or local, national and regional communities applying for the Prize.
 Applications are not opened to individuals.
How to apply?
Applications may be submitted in two ways:
• A candidate shall ask a nominating body to send its application to UNESCO;
•A nominating body may initiate the process of nominating a candidate and send the application to UNESCO.
A candidate shall be nominated by no more than one nominating body.
Applications must be written either in English or French only.
Unsolicited applications are not taken into consideration.
What is a nominating body?
A nominating body may be Multinationals and Bilateral Organizations, Ministries of Education (or other relevant Ministries), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), organizations or institutions directly involved in, or aware of, outstanding practices concerning teachers. It is the nominating body who sends the applications to UNESCO.
A nominating body may nominate and recommend up to five

candidates for the Prize

Candidates should be organizations, international or national non-governmental organizations (NGOs), institutions or local, national and regional communities who are working to enhance the performance and effectiveness of teachers.

Selection process
1. Applications received before the deadline are reviewed by the Screening panel, who will eliminate non-eligible candidates and transmit them to the International Jury for the Prize.
2. The International Jury meets in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to select the Prize winners.
3. Prizes are awarded to winners during an official ceremony organized at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day (October 2014).

The United Nations Online Volunteering Award 2013,

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is calling for nominations for the UNV Online Volunteering Award 2013, which will be presented to ten online volunteers or teams of online volunteers for their contributions to peace and development projects and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

A jury made up of UNV representatives and external experts in volunteerism and development cooperation will review the nominations and select the 10 winners.

In the run up to International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December,  the global public will be invited to vote for their favorite winner. The volunteer or team that gets the most votes will be announced as the public’s favorite on IVD.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The award will be given to ONLINE VOLUNTEERS or TEAMS OF ONLINE VOLUNTEERS, who supported an organization working for peace and development over the Internet. The online collaboration must date back less than two years and must have been facilitated through the UNV Online Volunteering service.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The jury will review the nominations and select the 10 winners based on the following criteria:

* Online volunteers’ commitment and contribution
* Collaboration between the volunteers and the organization
* Result of the collaboration and impact on the organization’s activities

PURPOSE

The purpose of the award is to recognize online volunteers’ contributions towards achieving the MDGs, to showcase the many ways in which online volunteers can strengthen the capacities of organizations and to demonstrate the difference volunteers can make to peace and development projects by sharing their time, skills and expertise over the Internet.

The UNV Online Volunteering Award presents an opportunity for both, online volunteers and organizations, to bring their online volunteering experiences and good practices to the attention of a global audience.

Your experience may inspire others and thus help mobilize more volunteers to engage in peace and development activities over the Internet, or encourage more organizations to strengthen their efforts by tapping into the rich resource that online volunteers provide. Also, by submitting your nomination, you express your appreciation to your volunteers or fellow online volunteers for a successful online collaboration.

Call for Nominations: Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Awards 2013. ($10,000 Prize for Winners)

Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network (PAHRD–Net) has opened a call for nominations for human rights defenders awards. The awards will honor exceptional individuals who peacefully promote and protect universally recognized rights as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Altogether six awards will be presented, one Pan-African award and five sub-regional awards:

–        Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

–        East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

–        West Africa Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

–        Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

–        Central Africa Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

–        Northern Africa Human Rights Defenders Award 2013

Both individuals and organizations are eligible for the award. Nominations should be received not later than 15 August 2013. Please use the form availed. Submissions can be made in Arabic, French, English or Portuguese. Return your nomination to [email protected].

Awards include support to the human rights work of the winning individual or organisation with a total value of 10 000 USD for the Pan-African award winner and 5 000 USD for each sub-regional award winners. The winners will be selected by an independent jury. The awards will be presented to the winners at the occasion of the 54th Ordinary Session of the Africa Commission on Human and People’s Rights scheduled to be held in October 2013 in Banjul, The Gambia.

Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network

During the inaugural All Africa HRDs Conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1998, the challenges faced by human rights defenders were enumerated and a strategy was developed to establish five sub-regional networks to meet the needs of and build protection institutions at national levels. Pan-African HRDs Network (PAHRD-Net) is made up of five sub-regional networks i.e. Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, West Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, Southern African Human Rights Defenders Network hosted by the International Commission of Jurists and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, and Central African Human Rights Defenders Network.

The PAHRD-Net aims at promoting safe legal and working environment for HRDs and providing ongoing and effective support to human rights defenders through building their capacity in security and protection management in order to ensure that those defenders can in turn offer greater protection to the victims and witnesses they work with. It further seeks to support the efforts by other stakeholders to mainstream defenders’ protection into the agenda of key stakeholders, notably relevant national authorities, national and international organizations and foreign governments.

Purpose

To recognize individuals or organizations for their contributions to the field of Peace Education, and to increase awareness for the positive impact peace education work has on people.

Goals

  • To promote the importance of peace education globally by recognizing individuals and organizations for their work.
  • To encourage the integration of knowledge about peacemaking into curricula at all levels of education; and
  • To reward innovative approaches to the theory, practice, and teaching of peace and social justice.

Background and History

Established in 2007 when Fuad and Nancy El-Hibri were approached and requested to raise awareness about peace work, the El-Hibri Peace Education Prize recognizes outstanding individuals or organizations in peace education demonstrating successful and innovative approaches to promoting peace and social justice globally. The Prize is awarded annually at the El-Hibri Peace Education Prize Ceremony in Washington, DC.

The Prize

  • Cash award of $20,000;
  • Public recognition of achievements;
  • Promotion of the Laureate’s work; and
  • Assistance in arranging speaking engagements to raise awareness about Peace Education.

Selection

All Prize Laureates are selected based on nominations. The selection process may include interviews with references who can speak to the nominee’s contributions to the field of Peace Education.

The selection of the prize Laureate is made by El-Hibri Peace Education Prize Selection Committee, chaired by Nonviolence International President Mubarak Awad. Membership of the Committee includes experts in the field of Peace Education and Prize Laureates.

The El-Hibri Peace Education Prize will be presented at the annual El-Hibri Peace Education Prize Ceremony in Washington, DC.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize is an annual US$ 4 million award, which recognizes individuals, companies and organizations that have made significant contributions in the fields of renewable energy and sustainability. High Schools, however, are asked to submit a proposal for funding consideration.

“Based on the legacy of sustainability left by the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Zayed Future Energy Prize is fast creating that much needed ripple effect around the world,” said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Director General of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. “From China to Mexico and from Germany to Tanzania; over the past five years, the Prize has continued to award and reward the innovators of our time in the hope that the impact of the Prize will enable the world to address our collective future energy challenges.”

Launched in 2008, the Prize has gained global recognition and built a strong reputation as the most influential award in the renewable energy and sustainability community. Submissions and nominations have increased 300 percent over the past five years as recognition of the value of the Prize grows.

The 2013 winners of the prize were selected after a careful evaluation of 579 submissions. The eight winners included Siemens (Large Corporation), d.light design (SME), Ceres (NGO), Dr. Jose Goldemberg (Lifetime Achievement), and four high schools representing various regions of the world (Global High Schools Prize).

“The Zayed Future Energy Prize invites the global community to join forces and strengthen its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. Our previous winners have collectively reduced the plight of 140,000 displaced persons, provided hundreds of thousands of jobs and provided clean water and electricity to over 8 million people in villages and rural parts of Africa and Asia. We encourage companies, individuals and schools from across the world to join us in solving the energy challenge and participate by submitting their applications before August 5,” continued Dr Al Jaber.

The winners of the Prize are chosen according to a stringent four-stage selection process, including a shortlisting by an independent research and analysis firm and evaluation by the Review committee and Selection committees respectively. In the fourth and final stage, the jury comprising heads of state, leading academics, energy experts and world renowned personalities with an interest in sustainability, discuss and select the winners and runners up in each award category. Evaluations and eliminations are made using a scoring matrix based on the Prize’s four main criteria: impact, long-term vision, leadership and innovation.

Winners will be announced on January 20, 2014, at an award ceremony to be held in Abu Dhabi as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

World Innovation Summit for Education Learners’ Voice Program 2013.

World Innovation Summit for Education is now looking for a further 30 outstanding young learners aged 18 to 25 to apply or be nominated to join this growing global community. They will be invited to attend the WISE Summit in Doha from October 29 to 31, as well as a pre-Summit workshop that will start on October 27, and may be involved in year-long activities during the rest of 2013 and throughout 2014. Qatar Foundation will cover all fares and accommodation costs for the selected Learners.

An Ongoing Year-Long Program 

WISE Learners’ Voice brings the views of students to the issue of rethinking education. The Program builds their communication, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to ensure that decision-makers hear their all-important voice, and that they are prepared to take on leading roles in their field and the education world.

A Growing and Active Community

In 2013, 30 outstanding young people aged 18 to 25 will be joining the WISE Learners’ network. The Call for Nominations and Applications will be open until June 25, 2013, 18.00 GMT.

The current Learners’ Voice community consists of 78 Learners who were recruited in 2010, 2011 and 2012. They are from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, and from all around the world. They share a passion for education, and together they represent the unique perspective of the learning community in WISE.

The 2012 Learners, who played an active role in last year’s Summit, are currently taking part in a year-long Executive Education Program that combines online sessions, theoretical lectures, practical workshops and project-based work. They are also making their voice heard at a number of international conferences and will present their work at the 2013 WISE Summit.

Learners can either apply personally or be nominated.

WISE invites representatives of institutions, organizations, programs and networks around the world to nominate highly motivated learners with outstanding or original academic/learning experiences to participate in the WISE Learners’ Voice Program. WISE is seeking to form a group of individuals from diverse educational paths and cultural backgrounds

WISE is also inviting highly motivated learners to apply for the Learners’ Voice Program by submitting an application form that needs to be endorsed by 2 referees.

Learner Selection Criteria

1. Age and status: Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 25 on October 29, 2013.
All students must be considered legal adults in their home country.

2. Availability: Participants must be available to travel to Doha, Qatar, and be able and willing to participate in the full WISE Learners’ Voice event beginning at 9:00 on October 27, 2013 and ending at 16:00 on October 31, 2013.

3. Participants should be willing to contribute to online discussions prior to the event and to work with the WISE Team to prepare for a successful WISE Summit.

4. Continuing involvement and participation: Participants should be willing to continue their involvement with the WISE initiative following the WISE Summit and participate in other events and activities during the remainder of 2013 and throughout 2014 and beyond. In particular, the WISE Learners’ Voice Program is designing 3 short residential education workshops (5 to 10 days each) to take place in December 2013, June 2014 and October/November 2014, just before the Summit.

5. All participants must hold a passport that is valid for at least 18 months following the WISE Summit to be held October 29-31, 2013.

6. College/university or training program attendance: All participants should be currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) a course of study at a recognized college, university or training program.

7. Social engagement: All participants should be able to demonstrate their engagement in wider social networks or communities of practice broadly associated with their studies and their professional interests.

8. Professional and wider interests: Participants should be able to demonstrate interest in education and other wider global development issues.

9. Personality: Participants should be personable and able to work well in multicultural, multinational teams.

10. Communication skills: Participants should be comfortable with presenting and speaking in public.
 
11. Language skills: All participants should be proficient in spoken and written English.

12. All nominators and applicants must agree to respect all final participant selection decisions made by the WISE Team. No appeal or claim will be accepted.

Research excellence nominations accepted through September 15 to support research, build capacity and inspire a new generation of women scientists in the developing world

The Elsevier Foundation, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world hereby call for award nominations for the 2014 Elsevier Foundation Awards recognizing talented early career women scientists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. This year’s awards program will focus on chemistry.

The five winning scientists will be celebrated for their research excellence, and receive a cash prize of US$5,000 in addition to a year’s complementary access to ScienceDirect and all-expenses paid attendance at the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in February 2014.

Nominations will be accepted from April 10th through September 15, 2013. The award winners will be announced in February 2014 at the AAAS annual conference.

Each year, the Elsevier Foundation Award Program, in collaboration with OWSD and TWAS rotates between disciplines (medical/life sciences, chemistry and physics/math) to ensure optimal exposure and networking synergies.

The 2013 Elsevier awards issued in Boston in February, awarded five medical and life sciences researchers from Bangladesh, Yemen, Peru, Nigeria and Mongolia for their research excellence.

Nominations for the awards will be accepted from early career scientists (within ten years of graduating with a PhD degree) from the 81 scientifically-lagging countries as defined by TWAS. All nominations will be reviewed by a committee of eminent scientists representing the five regions in the discipline selected, including members of TWAS and OWSD, and chaired by OWSD president, Prof. Fang Xin.

“TWAS sees these awards for early-career women scientists as extremely important,” said Romain Murenzi, the Academy’s executive director. “Not only do they recognize life-enhancing and life-saving research, but they send a message to younger generations of girls and women: We need you, and we need your best work, to address the great challenges that confront all people and all societies. We’re honored to work with the Elsevier Foundation and OWSD to recognize this excellence in research.”

“Partnering with TWAS and OWSD to pay tribute to women scientists in the developing world is an honor given their unique insights into conducting science in the Global South,” said David Ruth, Executive Director of the Elsevier Foundation, “These awards have taught us a great deal about the challenges and dynamics faced by women scientists as they navigate their academic disciplines within their countries.”

Rockerfeller Foundation invites Applications for the Bellagio/PopTech Fellows program in Italy, 2013.

Nominations for the 2013 Bellagio/PopTech Fellows are now open.

The Bellagio/PopTech Fellows Program brings together a small, interdisciplinary group of four to six hand-selected artists, scientists, designers, technologists and social innovators at The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy for a two-week immersion residency. The program is a unique incubator for unconventional, cross-disciplinary collaboration around global topics, and also serves as a laboratory for the study of the nature of collaboration itself as a tool for creative problem-solving and solution development.

Four-to-six Fellows will be chosen for their technical and creative excellence, and their ability to work and think across disciplines. Fellows will receive travel, lodging and facilitated support on-site as they work together to imagine new approaches to complex challenges. A short documentary will be made about their work and process.

The residency will occur in mid-late August 2013, and will be followed by a joint presentation at the October 2013 PopTech conference in Camden, Maine.

2013 Program Focus: Creating Resilience Through Big Data

A progressively fragile and interdependent world means vulnerable people face an increased risk from shocks and disruptions. And yet, this is also a moment of extraordinary growth in human knowledge and technological capacity.

In short, we are in a footrace between mushrooming challenges and unprecedented growth in our capabilities.

The 2013 Bellagio/PopTech Fellows program will focus on just how the remarkable power of new technologies might play in bolstering psychological, social and systemic resilience. We’ll explore data science and visualization, mobile and other distribution technologies.

This effort will be creative, interdisciplinary and collaborative. Dealing with data is an art as much as a science, and so we will be seeking Fellows from the fields of art, technology, resilience research, and various social domains.

 

Eligibility

The PopTech/Bellagio Fellows program is seeking Fellows from the fields of data and data visualization, technology, design, art, social and natural sciences, resilience research, and other social domains. A diverse cohort of Fellows will be chosen for their technical and creative excellence and their demonstrated ability to work and think across disciplines.

Candidates must have an easy working proficiency in English, as the Fellows program will be held in English.

Nominations of candidates from diverse backgrounds are welcome, and nominations of candidates from and/or based in Africa, Asia, or Latin America are strongly encouraged.  .

Candidates may work in the for-profit, non-profit, academic, government or other sectors.

The Yara Prize Committee is inviting nominations for a candidate that deserves recognition for achievements in combating hunger and poverty and enhancing food security and sustainable agricultural development in Africa.
The mission of the Yara Prize is to contribute to the transformation of African agriculture and food and nutrition security, within a sustainable context, thereby helping to reduce hunger and poverty.
The Yara Prize was established in 2005 as a direct response to the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s call for a green revolution in Africa in 2004. It aims at celebrating significant achievements related to food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture with a transformative power.

The Prize can be awarded to any qualified candidate, irrespective of nationality, profession or location, whose work, and contributions deriving from the work, has had a clear impact on the African situation, nationally, regionally or for the continent.

The Prize can be awarded with reference to a specific contribution or achievement, or a series of efforts and results; recently or in the past, or over a period of time – judged as viable and in accordance with acknowledged principles of sustainability.

Current or recent members of the Yara Prize Committee, or an institution/organization headed by such a member, are ineligible for the Prize. The Prize cannot be awarded to a person already deceased, but will be presented in the event a Prize winner dies before receiving the Prize.

The Prize can be awarded to more than one winner, but not more than two. If shared, each winner will receive equal prize money (USD 60 000 divided in two), a diploma and a trophy.

To be eligible for the Prize, a nomination must be submitted in writing, in English or French. Please use these guidelines to ensure that we can properly evaluate your nomination. Full guidelines in both English and French can be downloaded from the links to the right.

In order to be considered by the Prize Committee, all nominations and supporting documentation must be received by May 3, 2013.
