Applications are invited from Young professional choreographers, dancers, composers and lighting designers to participate in the third edition of the Crossings International Artistic Workshop.

The third edition of the Crossings International Artistic Workshop will take place in  Cape Town from 8 to 17 November 2013. Crossings #3 is hosted by the University of  Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre, School of Dance and Gordon Institute for  Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), with the support of Institut français and The  French Institute of South Africa.

Crossings is an international workshop for professional choreographers, composers,  dancers and lighting designers under the supervision of a team of international and  established artists. Initially conceived by French choreographer Michel Kelemenis,  Crossings took place in 2010 and 2011 in Johannesburg at the Dance Factory, the  Dance Forum, Moving into Dance Mophatong and Vuyani Dance Theatre.

Crossings gives international artists the opportunity to collaborate together in order to  show a 12min-long artistic creation. The classes and workshops will take place at the  Baxter Theatre Centre and UCT School of Dance, and the results will be presented at  the Baxter Theatre at the end of the ten-day residency

Artist participants to be selected
3 choreographers of whom 1 must be of South African nationality
3 composers of whom 1 must be of South African nationality
3 South African lighting designers
12 dancers of whom 6 must be of South African nationality

Applicant eligibility

Choreographers must
– be residents of any country
– have created at least 3 creations.
Dancers must

– be residents of any country
– have been dancing (contemporary) for at least 4 years
Composers must
– be residents of any country
– have home studio knowledge
– be interested in composing for dance
– bring their own instruments

Lighting Designers must
– be South African
– have already worked as a lighting designer for dance in the last 2 years
All applicants must
– speak English;
– be available between 7 and 18 November 2013;
– be motivated to work under pressure during the ten-day session.
Application requirements
Applications must be submitted in English and consist of:
– a registration form to be filled by the applicant (can be downloaded from the  following websites : www.ifas.org.za; www.gipca.uct.ac.za; www.baxter.co.za)
– a description of the artistic discourse of the applicant (no longer than 1 page)
– a biography outlining relevant experiences
– recent proof of the applicant’s artistic experiences:
o choreographers and lighting designers must submit a video link on  youtube or vimeo illustrating their work (No DVDs can be submitted)
o composers must submit mp3 or wav music
o newspaper clipping, photo
– two reference letters from referees who are familiar with the applicant’s work

Selection process

Applications will be assessed by an international Selection Committee made up of the  artistic facilitators with the participation of personalities from the artistic community.  Selected participants will be informed after 22 August 2013.

Crossings International Artistic Workshop 2013 Outline
7 to 10 November 2013
Welcome, classes and workshops during the day Each day will begin at 9am with a 75min-long technical dance class open to all participants, followed by three different workshops of two hours each, under the  supervision of the facilitators.

Guidelines for collaboration:
– Each choreographer will work with a different composer, with a different  number of dancers, and in a different space each day; groups will be created  during class every morning;
– The lighting designers will work under the supervision of the facilitator;
– Each dancer will work at least once with a choreographer;
– Choreographers will not perform in the choreographic creations.

Presentations in the evenings
Results will be performed every evening at the Baxter Theatre, as well as assessed,  questionned and commented by participants, facilitators and selected audiences  during a Feedback Session.

11 to 17 November
One week dedicated to creation At the beginning of the second week, choreographers will decide to work for the  remainder of the residency with a composer, a lighting designer and a number of  dancers on the creation of a short piece. The final works, no longer than 12 minutes  each, will be performed Sunday 17 November at the Baxter Theatre.

Guidelines for creations:
– No longer than 12min;
– no costume budget;
– no set.

Conditions
There are no tuition fees for the workshop. All meals will be provided. Candidates  residing outside of Cape Town will be accommodated. Candidates residing outside of  South Africa will be required to organise and pay for their own international transport.  It might be possible to find funding for travelling costs; please contact the organisers  for more information in this regard. As Crossings is a training opportunity for
professional artists, participants will not receive any fees or per diems.
