Open Society Foundation Disability Rights Scholarship Program 2016 (Fully Funded)

The Disability Rights Scholarship Program provides awards for master’s degree study to disability rights advocates, lawyers, and educators to develop new legislation, jurisprudence, policy, research, and scholarship to harness the innovations and opportunities offered by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The program’s objective is to provide disability rights advocates and lawyers with the necessary expertise to develop new legislation, jurisprudence, policy, research, and scholarship to harness the innovations and opportunities offered by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Inclusive Education Scholarships

  • For 2016–2017, in addition to awards in law, we will offer two awards for master’s degrees in education, focusing on inclusive education.
  • Participants will build a foundation in the principles, values, and practices of inclusive education, and upon completion of the program will be equipped to lead reform of education policy and practice in their home countries.
Eligibility Criteria

The competition is merit-based and open to those meeting the following criteria:

  • be a citizen and legal resident of Argentina, China, Colombia, Malawi, Mexico, Mozambique, Peru, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, or Zambia at the time of application
  • have work experience in the legal profession or advocacy focusing on human/disability rights and/or work in education with a demonstrated interest in advancing inclusive education
  • have an excellent academic record with a bachelor of laws (LLB; in exceptional circumstances, those without a LLB but with substantial relevant experience may be considered); for inclusive education, a degree in teaching, public administration/policy, anthropology, social work, psychology, or related field
  • have demonstrated leadership in the field of disability rights or education
  • be proficient in spoken and written English or French and able to meet university-designated minimum scores on standardized language tests
  • be able to participate in an intensive academic writing program in summer 2016
  • be able to begin the graduate program in August or September 2016
  • be able to receive and maintain visa or study permit required by host country
  • demonstate a clear commitment to return to home country to advance the inclusion and full participation of persons with disabilities in their communities, or to aid ongoing disability rights work.

Fellowship Worth:

The fellowship provides:
• tuition and mandatory university fees;
• monthly stipend for room, board, and other living expenses;
• program-related travel;
• accident and sickness insurance during the program;
• funds for educational materials and professional development;
• all costs associated with pre-academic summer program and annual conference;
• support for students with disabilities to obtain reasonable accommodations necessary for participating in the program of study.
The fellowship does NOT provide funding for dependent family members

2016 Leventis Foundation Fellowships for Nigerians to study at the University of London.

The Centre of African Studies of the University of London invites applications from Nigerian academics to take part in a scheme of collaborative research funded by the Leventis Foundation.

The Leventis Research Co-operation Programme is devised to assist younger scholars develop their research interests in collaboration with their counterparts in London. Applicants are invited to apply to spend three months as visitors of the Centre of African Studies in order to pursue their research in libraries and archives and to participate in the intellectual life of the Centre. The scheme might be particularly appropriate for scholars working up a PhD thesis into publishable form.

How to Apply:

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants should send the following documents via email to [email protected]

  • A complete curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages)
  • A statement of current research interests (of not more than 1,000 words) specifying the aims to be achieved during the research period in London
  • One academic reference letter supporting the application (sent directly from the email account of the referee to [email protected])

Applications are considered by a Steering Committee in London. Emails will be sent to the applicants informing them of the Committee’s decision soon after the deadline of 31st March.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) 2016 – financial assistance to study at a tertiary institution in South Africa.

  • Are you in need of financial assistance to study at a tertiary institution?
  • Apply for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) study loan or bursary through the Financial Aid Bureaus at your tertiary institution or directly through the online application with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

NSFAS is a loan and bursary scheme funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training for those who do not have the financial means to fund their studies and / or cannot access bank funding, study loans or bursaries.

• Grade 12 learners from poor and working class families who cannot afford to pay for their studies
• Eligible students who were not funded in the previous years

2016 Commonwealth Academic Fellowships for Mid-Career Professionals to study in the United Kingdom

The Commonwealth Academic Fellowships offered by the CSC for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries in 2016. These fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas
interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), which is responsible for all matters concerning selection, academic studies, and evaluation. The British Council is responsible for supporting award holders in their home countries before and after their awards.
For early career academic staff from developing countries to spend between three and ten months at any approved UK university or higher education institution. Applications must include a justification for the length of award requested.
ELIGIBILITY
To apply for these fellowships, you must:
  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country. For a full list of eligible countries, visit http://bit.ly/cscuk-developing-cw-countries
  • Be employed by a university in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your fellowship in the UK on 1 October 2016. Any other start date will be permitted only in exceptional circumstances
  • Have been awarded your PhD between two and ten years prior to October 2016
  • Not have previously held a Commonwealth Academic Fellowship within five years
    AND
  • Have been awarded your PhD by a UK university while on a Commonwealth Scholarship
    OR
  • Be in the employment of your nominating university

Fellowship Worth:

Each fellowship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Research support grant, at a fixed rate according to your subject, payable to your host university
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,580 per month, or £1,959 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2015-2016 levels)
  • Grant towards the cost of preparing reports and other written work
  • Arrival allowance
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of approved travel within the UK or overseas
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £444 per month for the first child, and £109 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and solely legally responsible for them. The level of financial support provided through family allowances is under review and subject to change in both eligibility and rate.
HOW TO APPLY
  • If you have previously held a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship funded by the CSC and meet the eligibility criteria for these fellowships, you can apply directly to the CSC.
  • Selected universities are also invited to nominate their own academic staff. If you are employed by one of these universities, you must apply via that institution in the first instance. For a full list of eligible universities
  • You must check with your nominating university for their specific advice and rules for applying, and for their own closing date for applications.
  • You must make your application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS) – information on how to use the EAS, including detailed guides, is available at http://bit.ly/cscuk-academic-fellowships
  • Your application must be endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor or Executive Head of the university that employs you.
  • Unless you previously held a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship funded by the CSC, the CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via a nominating university.
  • All applications must be submitted via the EAS by 19 November 2015 at the latest.
  • The CSC cannot accept nominations for these fellowships from other organisations, or applications directly from individuals (other than those who have previously held a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship funded by the CSC); such applications will not be acknowledged
SELECTION PROCESS
  • The deadline for nominating universities to submit nominations to the CSC is 17 December 2015. The CSC invites around three times more nominations than fellowships available – therefore, nominated candidates are not guaranteed to be awarded a fellowship

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a Chevening partner. This year Open Society Foundations (OSF) is co-sponsoring a number of these Chevening Partnership Scholarships for applicants who wish to study at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

 Chevening-OSF-LSHTM are offering up to 10 co-funded Partnership Scholarships for 2016-17. These particular scholarships are being offered in addition to the general scheme (Main Award) Chevening Scholarships. The top ten successful candidates will be offered a Partnership Scholarship and all other successful candidates will receive a Chevening Scholarship through the main award programme.

Scholarship Worth:

  • Chevening-OSF-LSHTM Partnership Scholarships cover full tuition fees for your chosen course at LSHTM (country fee caps do not apply) and the same allowance and stipend package as a standard general scheme Chevening Award.
  • As a Chevening-OSF-LSHTM Partnership Scholarship recipient, you will stand to benefit from an expanding suite of unique networking and engagement opportunities offered by Chevening Partners.

Course:

  • Scholarships are available for one-year taught Masters degree offered at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The eligible courses are limited to LSHTM London-based courses (not distance learning) and to courses administered by LSHTM (not MSc Global Mental Health, MSc One Health, or MSc Veterinary Epidemiology).
  • Under the Chevening-OSF-LSHTM Partnership agreement applicants can choose any London-based course of study but priority will be given to applicants whose course of study will include a focus on human rights, post-conflict studies, sustainable development, community development, public health and/or health policy.

2016 ICFJ/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation HIV Prevention Reporting Fellowship for Journalists

ICFJ, in conjunction with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announces the HIV Prevention Reporting Fellowship. This opportunity is aimed at better equipping journalists with the knowledge and skills to report on VMMC and its implementation as an HIV prevention method.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Journalists from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are encouraged to apply for this fellowship.
  • Applicants are asked to submit proposed story ideas/reporting projects related to VMMC, with the understanding that the fellowship will help prepare selected applicants for reporting on the topic.
  • ICFJ will also offer a webinar for potential applicants to ask experts their questions about VMMC and the program

Benefits:

  • Following the webinar and the application deadline, a committee of judges will select 20 contest finalists for further mentorship on the topic.
  • The 20 finalists will take part in an intensive 4-day story lab in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2016. The lab will include briefings on VMMC and HIV prevention, as well as sessions on journalism skill-building, site visits and one-on-one mentoring sessions.
  • Upon completion of the boot camp, the fellows will have two months to complete their reporting projects, while working with ICFJ mentors throughout the process.
  • The three best published stories will be selected to take part in a study tour in the United States in late 2016.The study tour will focus more generally on HIV prevention methods, building on the participants’ knowledge of VMMC.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has announced the call for applications for the 2016 Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s & PhD available in South Africa, which commence in January 2016.

  • The Master’s Degree awards, which are up to two years in duration, are open to citizens of any Commonwealth country, other than South Africa, and the awards are tenable at any Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) member university, in South Africa.
  • Applicants for the PhD awards, which was put in place with the support of the David & Elaine Potter Foundation, must be citizens of an African Commonwealth country, other than South Africa.
  • The award is for a total of three years.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is a unique programme. Since its establishment in 1959, it has provided opportunities for over 30,000 citizens of all Commonwealth countries to study in other member countries. Following the establishment of the CSFP endowment fund in 2009, a new strand of Commonwealth Scholarships located in low and middle income countries is available.

The M-PESA Foundation Academy “The Academy” is a state of the art, mixed boarding high school providing world class Kenyan education.   • Among the 94 shortlisted students, the academy will choose two successful candidates from each of the 47 counties to go through their KCSE based secondary education at no cost.

The facility will boast first class sports, arts and music facilities, in addition to academic facilities, will include an indoor sports hall, a sports field, running track, swimming pools, squash courts, a music center and a 500 seat auditorium.

How to apply

You must apply to one of the following nominating bodies in the first instance – the CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships:

All applications must be made through your nominating body in your home country. Each nominating body is responsible for its own selection process. You must check with your nominating body for their specific advice and rules for applying, and for their own closing date for applications. The CSC does not impose any age limit on applicants, but nominating bodies may do so in line with their own priorities.

You must make your application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS)

You must use the Electronic Application System (EAS) to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship. The EAS allows you to submit your application electronically and to download and save your application in PDF format (which can then be printed in hard copy).

You should also:

  1. Check whether or not your Nominating Agency will be processing your application electronically. If so, you will be able to follow the progress of your application. There are three options available to Nominating Agencies – further details
  2. Print and send your application to your Nominating Agency, whether or not your Nominating Agency will be processing your application electronically.
  3. Wait when you have clicked on Submit at the end of your application. It can take up to three minutes for your application to be transferred to your Nominating Agency.
  4. Wait while downloading a PDF of your application. These PDFs can be up to 2 MB in size.
  5. Let your referees know in advance that they will each receive an email inviting them to complete their references electronically. This email is generated as soon as you submit your application.
  6. If you are applying for research Master’s or PhD study, let your potential supervisor(s) in the UK know in advance that they will each receive an email asking for a supporting statement. This email is generated as soon as you submit your application.

Nominating Agencies and the EAS

Nominating Agencies can use the EAS to select candidates to nominate to the CSC, or use their own application procedures.

Nominating Agencies have three options:

  1. Use the EAS to select and nominate candidates to the CSC
  2. Use hard copies of EAS applications to select and nominate candidates to the CSC
  3. Select candidates using their own application procedures and then ask these selected candidates to complete an application using the EAS

The Africa Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) is an annual event that brings together young people from across Africa to interact with leaders and policy makers on current global issues. The 2015 Africa Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) is the sixth to be organised by World Youth Alliance Africa.

The conference will be conducted in English.

The 2015 conference will take place at Strathmore University, Nairobi, Kenya from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th November, 2015.

Theme

The theme for the 2015 ELC is Empowering Youth to Shape Africa’s Future.

Africa’s youth make up more than 75% of Africa’s population. The youth are the future of Africa and we need to rise up and take charge of societies around us, taking active part in the life of society. We need to be empowered in education that directly develops the best in us, ethics, and skills in order to flourish and reach our full potential, and thereby guarantee free and just societies.

The conference is open to participants 16-30 years. The conference fee is KSHS 3000 or 30USD

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries presents exciting opportunities/positions for the unemployed youth through its Experiential Training,Internship, and the Young Professional Development Programme.

Successful applicants will undergo on-the-job development training in technical, professional, public service, business and life skills relevant and crucial for them to enter the formal job market.

The opportunities/positions presented are categorised as follows:

Young Professional Development Programme (Ref: YPDP/01/2016)

This category of opportunities calls for young graduates in possession of a requisite bachelor’s degree in agriculture, forestry or fisheries who would like to further their studies at B/Tech, Honours, Masters or Ph.D. levels.

Successful candidates will be expected to sign an internship contract with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Candidates will be placed with the relevant industry/research institution, will be allocated a mentor and will receive a monthly allowance from the department.

Candidates applying for this category must motivate on a separate page (not less than 300 words) why they think they should be considered for this programme and indicate the proposed fields of study for 2016, as well as the institution where they intend to study.

Successful candidates will be linked with funded research projects of the department. (20 interns)

Agri-export Technologists Programme (AETP/02/2016)

  • This category of opportunities calls for qualified unemployed graduates in possession of a 3-year (minimum) national qualification in one of the following fields: Agricultural Sciences, Food Technology or Environmental Health to participate in the Young Agricultural Export Technologists Programme to gain both the practical experience and employment in the perishable products export industry of South Africa.
  • Successful candidates will be placed with relevant industry organisations under the guidance and leadership of the Perishable Products Export Control Board (PPECB).

Malaria kills roughly 584,000 people a year, predominantly children under the age of five, even though it’s a treatable and preventable disease. Malaria is the deadliest and costliest disease in human history, and one of the few major global diseases that we can end in our lifetime.

Recognizing the need to cover this important issue, The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and Malaria No More have launched “Covering the Fight to Eradicate Malaria: A Fellowship for U.S. and Global Journalists.”

  • Thailand has been a successful model for the fight against malaria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Thailand has experienced a 70 percent decrease in reported malaria cases between 2000 and 2011, from 78,561 cases to 24,897 cases. However, migration, and a rise in drug resistance are challenging the country’s goal to eliminate malaria from 80 percent of the country by 2020 and threaten to undermine progress across the region.

Eligibility:

Criteria for applications:
* Journalists based in the United States, Africa, Asia and Europe who work full-time for a local or international news outlet (print, online, and/or broadcast).
* Applicants must propose at least one story idea covering malaria and related topics (though they will not be required to write about the proposed idea).
* Fluency in English is required.
* Written commitment or letter of intent from employer to publish at least one story after the tour.
* Written commitment from applicant to participate in the full program set for Oct. 25-31, 2015 (and necessary travel days).

Benefits:

  • The program will allow five U.S. journalists and four global journalists (from Africa, Asia and Europe) to travel to Thailand for a five-day study tour focusing on the causes, treatments, prevention and impact of malaria in Asia and around the globe
  • During the tour, participants will conduct site visits to clinics and treatment centers, attend briefings with health officials and disease experts, hear from organizations working to eliminate the disease and meet with local journalists covering the issue.

2015 MTN Nigeria Foundation Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (6th Phase)

Under the MTN Foundation  Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme, the Foundation has awarded scholarships to over 4,972 Science and Technology students in public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria from inception to date. The scholarship award is worth N200,000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira only) per student for the duration of one (1) academic year and it covers tuition, book allowance and stipend.

Application for the 2014/2015 session is now open and 500 successful applications will receive their awards during the 2014/2015 academic year.

Scholarships will also be renewed for the existing 1,380 students who have maintained a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 or its equivalent (Second class upper/upper credit).

The MTN Nigeria Foundation Science and Technology Scholarship seeks to attract high performing second year students studying full-time in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The Scholarship is aimed at recognizing and rewarding academic excellence while providing financial assistance to students who might otherwise be unable to pay for their tertiary education.

Scholarships

From 26 to 28 October 2015, UNESCO is organizing the 9th UNESCO Youth Forum on the theme “Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet ”. Taking place at a crucial time for sustainable development–just one month after the UN Summit for the post-2015 Development Agenda and one month before the United Nations Climate Change Conference- the 9th UNESCO Youth Forum will serve as a strategic opportunity to ensure that the voices of future generations remain front and center of the
development debates.
The 9th UNESCO Youth Forum will bring together over 500 young women and men from all over the world to focus on issues related to sustainable development and global citizenship. The forum culminates in a series of recommended actions to be presented at the UNESCO General Conference and to further shape local youth-led work. These actions will take into account the lived experiences and unique perspective of youth as well as the challenges facing young people today.
Minimum requirements:
This call is open to:
  • Youth-led video production companies with a minimum 2-years of professional video-production activity
  • Young freelance videographers with a minimum 2-years of professional video-production activity and with proven experience working within a video-production team
  • All applicants (either individual or within the applying companies) must meet the following criteria:
  • Be between 22-27 years old (inclusive) at the time of the Forum.
  • Minimum 2-year experience of professional video-production activity,preferably within a team.
  • Degree in Communication or Journalism
    Capacity to ensure the following film and production equipment and specifications:
    o Shoot and deliver for 16:9 aspect ratio
    o Shoot in Full HD 1920×1080 if possible, otherwise shoot SD and up-press to 1920×1080
    in post-production.
    oAudio and interviews should be recorded by external microphones, either lavaliers, reporter or
    shotgun-microphone

Benefits:

  • Travel to Paris and accommodation will be covered for the selected videographers.
  • The selected videographers must provide their own equipment. They will be provided with a brief of the video content they will be asked to produce, as well as instructions about format, and a pack including graphical content (logos, etc.) and background music, two weeks prior to travelling.
  • All the material produced within this framework will be UNESCO’s property. Mention will be made of its authors

FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund is the only youth-led fund focused exclusively on supporting global young feminist activism to advance social justice movements and agendas. FRIDA was created to bring new resources and new opportunities to young women and trans* youth globally. The call for proposals intend to support up to 30 new young feminist groups led by young women and trans* youth under 30 years of age.

Eligibility:

  • Groups founded or led by young women or trans* youth (under 30 years) that are committed to:
    • Advancing and defending women’s rights from a feminist perspective;
    • Improving the lives of young women/trans* youth at local, national, regional or international levels;

The Animation Artist in Residence Tokyo (A-AIR), organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan (Bunka-cho), is an artist in residence program that provides three outstanding young animation artists from around the world with an opportunity to come to Tokyo and create new works while directly interacting with Japanese animation culture. It aims to promote both the creation of excellent works of animation and a better understanding of Japanese culture.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Reside outside of Japan and be a citizen of a country other than Japan.
  2. Have had one of their animated works screened at an international film festival, exhibition or similar event where works from countries other than their own were also screened/featured.
  3. Be between the ages of 20 and 35 as of September 10th, 2015.
  4. Be able to speak either English or Japanese at least well enough to communicate in everyday situations.
  5. Be in good health.
  6. Have access to the equipment necessary to participate in a remote interview (i.e. a computer capable of connecting to the internet and using Skype).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Entrepreneurs who have an established, for-profit start-up or business.
  • Businesses in start-up stage (which means the business has a working prototype of its concept, ideally with some demonstrable user traction, generating a maximum of US$500,000 – or local currency equivalent – in annual revenues and has been incorporated for no more than 3 years) or growth stage (which means the business is beyond the working prototype stage, and can show significant user traction and sales, generating a maximum of US$1 million – or local currency equivalent – in annual revenues and has been incorporated for more than 3 years).
  • You will have a strong vision, a compelling idea and a solid business plan.
  • You’ll also need to showcase how your business has a positive impact.
  • You must be over 25 to enter The Venture.

Prize:

 

  • The prize for the winner(s) of the Global Competition is a share of a fund of US$1,000,000 (the “Fund”), with the prize money available in two separate stages: the weekly consumer voting and also the final pitch and exposure for your business through participating in the Global Competition.
  • The Global Competition consists of the following three stages:
    1. the Accelerator Week comprising a series of lectures, workshops and coaching sessions;
    2. the Consumer Directed Competition which involves the allocation of US$250,000 of the total Fund on a weekly basis based on consumer voting; and

Funding

  • After announcing the global finalists, the public will be able to vote for their favourite to determine how $250,000 of the fund is distributed amongst the finalists.
  • Then, at The Venture Final pitch event in June or July 2016, each finalist will have a chance to pitch for a share of the remaining $750,000 in front of an expert judging panel.

Judging Criteria

Every submission will be judged on five criteria. These criteria are:

  • Market opportunity and size.
  • Demonstrable impact: measurable social or environmental impact and a model that can scale.
  • Sound business model and organizational strategy.
  • Financial feasibility and sustainability: can earn revenue.
  • Skills, experience and commitment of management team.

The Solutions Summit is a catalytic gathering taking place on September 27th, 2015 at UN Headquarters.  It marks the beginning of a longer-term grassroots effort to lift-up exceptional innovators – technologists, engineers, scientists, who are developing solutions that address one or more of the 17 sustainable development goals

The Solutions Summit is being led by the UN Foundation, Project Everyone, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), in collaboration with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Kenyan Ministry of Information Communications and Technology, (with an open invitation for other governments and collaborators to join), the Estonian Information System Authority, and with the indispensable support of global friends and colleagues. UN-NGLS is fully coordinating the selection process to curate solutions that will be featured during the inaugural Solutions Summit.

The purpose of the Solutions Summit is two-fold

1) to make visible, and lift-up exceptional innovators — technologists, engineers, scientists, and others — who are developing solutions that address one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and

2) to catalyze a grassroots effort, where communities scout and convene resources around solution-makers.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also being referred to as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 goals for global dignity, prosperity, partnership, and justice for all people and the planet. The framework will be formally launched over September 25-27th, 2015. UN Member States, civil society, and private sector contributors will use the Sustainable Development Goals to shape and guide development global efforts over the next 15 years.

Intended Outcomes

  • The physical gathering will serve as a catalyst for a longer-term, locally-led and globally-supported effort to activate the world’s most forward thinking technologists, scientists, and engineers and to convene the resources and talent to apply their work in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals.

2015 Masters Research Grants Fish Trade Program in Africa

The WorldFish Center with the funding from the European Commission (EC) has joined efforts
with AU-IBAR and NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA), to implement a
programme called “Improving Food Security and Reducing Poverty through Intra-regional Fish Trade in Sub-Saharan Africa” (also referred to as Fish Trade Program).

The Fish Trade Program aims to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing the capacities of regional and pan-African organizations to support their member states to better integrate intra-regional fish trade into their development and food security policy agendas.

Eligibility

It is expected that the candidates should be from AU Member states and should have completed
their course work in any of the following Universities which are participating in the implementation of the Fish Trade project;
a. University of Abidjan, Ivory Coast
b. University of Dakar, Senegal
c. University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
d. University of Douala, Cameroun
e. University of Ghana, Ghana
f. University of Ibadan, Nigeria
g. Lilongwe University of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Malawi
h. National University of Rwanda Other Universities within the regions will also be considered but priority will be given to the Universities above

  • The students should be pursuing masters or have proven background in the following programs; Economics, Fisheries Economics, Agriculture Economics, International Trade and other related programs.
  • The candidate should be willing to undertake the study in the southern corridor and parts of eastern corridor, such as Rwanda at the minimum possible cost.

The candidates must develop a five paged concept note together with their supervisors and must have an endorsement letter from their supervisors and should include the followingkey sections;

  • Indicate the country in which the study will be undertaken indicate the university of study, degree program being undertaken and indicative courses so far studied under this program
  • Clearly indicate what they are going to do and how they are going to do it (proposed methodology)
  • Linkage of academic study to overall fish trade project
  • How their project will contribute towards achievement of their national developmental goals
  • How they are going to collect data and analyze their data to ensure that the work is publishable and have an academic tone

  • An indicative budget for the whole study and workplan

Mobilizing Women for Climate Justice Travel Fund for Female Climate Advocates to Attend COP21 in Paris, France (Fully Funded)

Apply for the “Mobilizing Women for Climate Justice” travel funds to attend COP21 in Paris. Funds are available for women advocates to participate in the UN Conference on Climate Change (UNFCC COP21), to take place December 2015 in Paris, France.

The “Mobilizing Women for Climate Justice” travel fund will support selected advocates to prepare for and attend the UNFCCC meetings as well as for capacity building activities.

The Paris UN climate conference in December 2015 will deliver a new universal climate change agreement. The new agreement is aimed at putting the world firmly on track to a low-carbon, sustainable future that keeps  a global temperature rise under 2 degrees Celsius.

Travel support will include transportation to and from the upcoming UNFCCC negotiations, accommodation, and a daily subsistence allowance (DSA). Advocates will attend the meetings as representatives of their regions/networks/alliances/communities and engage effectively with other CSO Constituencies of the UNFCCC to develop and lobby concrete policy recommendations.

Support:

  • Travel support will include transportation to and from the upcoming UNFCCC negotiations, accommodation and a daily subsistence allowance (DSA).
  • In addition, a select number of small stipends may be made available for participants to conduct local consultations and capacity building sessions before or after meetings.

Expectations:

  • Advocates will attend the meetings as representatives of their regions/networks/alliances/communities, and engage effectively with allies and partners across CSO Constituencies of the UNFCCC to develop and lobby concrete policy recommendations.
  • They will arrive one day prior to the start of the meeting in order to attend a training and strategy session.
  • Advocates will also participate in relevant webinars or conference calls planned prior to and in between sessions.
  • Capacity building will include training on the UNFCCC process, developing lobby positions, effective advocacy and media outreach.

Applications:

  • Applications can be submitted in English (preferred), French or Spanish.
  • Advocates will be selected to ensure a diverse representation of regions, experience and networks. Advocates will be selected from civil society and may not represent a Government, UN agency, Intergovernmental Institution or a private company. Individuals representing indigenous, youth, and/or migrant networks or communities at the frontlines of climate impacts are encouraged to apply.
  • Preference will be given to those who are available to attend at least two of the upcoming UNFCCC meetings. All fully completed applications will be considered.

Getty Scholar Grants are for established scholars, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa, where they pursue their own projects free from academic obligations, make use of Getty collections, join their colleagues in a weekly meeting devoted to an annual research theme, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.

The Getty Scholar programs aim to fill a need for opportunities for senior-level professionals, fellows, scholars and writers to pursue research on topics that bring new knowledge and fresh perspectives to their field. While in residence, Scholars participate in the intellectual life of the Getty, making use of research collections at the Getty Center and Villa, and in the greater Los Angeles area. They also become active participants in the cultural life of the city.

Benefits:

  • A stipend of up to $65,000 per year will be awarded based on length of stay, need, and salary.

Their design prototypes will then be exhibited at one of the design calendar’s most important event

The theme for the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2016 is ‘Anticipation’.  LEXUS strives to develop products and services by anticipating the needs of people and society. This year’s applicants are encouraged to submit innovative designs and unique interpretations that are true to the essence of the theme.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The Lexus Design Award 2016 (The Contest) is open to professionals, students and design enthusiasts from every country in the world and only to individuals who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry.
  • Minors and individuals who have no or only limited legal capacity may not participate.

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

Worth: $50,000 per year

Duration : 3 years (non-renewable)

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its seventh annual International Essay Contest, open to teachers and students anywhere in the world.

This year, the carnegie council is asking you to write about one of three selected Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs will replace the Millenium Development Goals when they expire at the end of 2015.

ESSAY TOPIC: Focusing on one of the following SDGs,  propose specific measures for your country (or region or city) to reach the goal’s objectives in the next 15 years.

  • Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls: OR
  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts: OR
  • Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS:

CLIMATE CHANGE: International Student Photo Contest

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its third annual International Student Photography Contest.

This year’s topic is Climate Change: Send us your photos that show examples of climate change OR examples of combating or adapting to climate change.    

The contest will be conducted on Carnegie Council’s Global Ethics Network,  social media platform for exploring the role of ethics in international relations. Check out last year’s winners on the theme of Fairness and its Opposite, and see below for details on how to participate.

The Nikon International Small World Competition first began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.

Eligibility-  Photomicrography

 

  • Anyone over the age of 18 interested in digital or film photography through the microscope is eligible, with the exception of employees of Nikon, their families, the contest judges, and individuals engaged in the manufacture or sale of microscopes or photographic equipment.
  • Photomicrographs must be taken using a light microscope, such as one of the Nikon series of compound or stereoscopic microscopes. The use of Nikon equipment is not required.
  • Any type of specimen is acceptable. All techniques of light microscopy are acceptable. Electron microscopy is not acceptabl

The 2016 Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Scholarships for Foreign Students to study in Japan is open to foreign students who will attend a graduate school at a Japanese university.

Number of Scholarships Available : 15 to 20 students
The period of the scholarship is set in accordance with the shortest period of time
required to complete the intended degree.
(1) ¥200,000 per month for 1 or 2 years
(2) ¥180,000 per month for 3 years
(3) ¥150,000 per month for 4 or 5 years
Requirements
(To be considered for the scholarship, the student must satisfy ALL of the requirement criteria below.)
  • The student does not possess Japanese citizenship.
  • The student must be registered to attend or applying for a graduate school starting from April 1, 2016.
  • To be eligible, students enrolled in a PhD Program must have been born after March 31,1980.
  • Those enrolled in a Master’s Program must have been born after March 31, 1985
  • The student must be able to assure the committee that he or she will be able to secure employment in their home country after graduating from a graduate school.
  • The student must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, and must be able to attend the events organized by the foundation and take part in the network as an alumni member.
  • The student must be able to carry an everyday conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese

Knowledge for Tomorrow – Cooperative Research Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa

The funding initiative is open to all disciplines and aims at the development and sustainable reinforcement of research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Research projects, developed and carried out by African scholars and scientists in close cooperation with their German partners, shall provide junior researchers in Africa with an opportunity to enhance their skills and academic qualifications. Special emphasis is put on the development, reinforcement, and extension of academic networks inside Africa beyond existing language barriers.

This funding initiative aims at extending and strengthening research in the regions of Sub-Saharan Africa.

This postdoctoral fellowship program aims at providing sustainable support for research in the humanities. It offers opportunities for postdoctoral researchers at both junior (i.e. up to 3 years post -PhD) and senior level (i.e. 3 to 6 years post-PhD) to develop and conduct their own research projects
of a duration of three years.
While open for any applicant who meets the eligibility criteria,the current call builds on a previous call in 2012, and especially invites those junior fellows currently funded within the initiative to submit applications for senior fellowships. Similarly, senior fellows currently funded within this initiative can apply for final funding for up to two years.
Thematic Scope
The call is open to applications from the humanities, including disciplines such as history, cultural anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, philosophy, literature, linguistics, musicology, art history, media studies, visual studies, and religious studies.
Fellowship Worth:
  • The fellowship covers salaries for the fellow (and for MA and/or Ph.D. students) as well as non-personnel costs for e. g. consumables, equipment, travel, and administration of up to 110,000 EUR for junior fellows and of up to 145,000 EUR for senior fellows.
  • Furthermore, the budget may include a salary for one lecturer to reduce the personal teaching workload of the applicant.

University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program 2016/2017 (Fully Funded)

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program (UMAPS) brings early career faculty from universities in Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, and Uganda to Ann Arbor for residencies lasting up to six months. Scholars are paired with a faculty mentor during their stay and have full access to U-M’s resources to further their work on a research project, an academic degree, publications, grant proposal, or other relevant activity.

The program supports the development of the next generation of African scholars by integrating them into international academic networks, and it internationalizes U-M by generating research and teaching collaborations across diverse disciplines, from engineering to African literature.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility Requirements for ALL applicants:

  • Preference given to early career faculty who have taught in the higher education system for less than ten years
  • Applicants may or may not have received their PhD

Specific Eligibility Requirement for Applicants from:

GHANA, LIBERIA, SOUTH AFRICA OR UGANDA:

  • Must be a faculty member of a college or university in Ghana, Liberia, South Africa or Uganda.

Scholarship Worth:

  • African scholars will be provided with round-trip airfare from their home country to Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • Scholars will receive a stipend to cover living, housing, and research expenses during their tenure at the University of Michigan

  • Each scholar will be asked to give a presentation on their work during the residency
  • The scholarship may be combined with other scholarships or funds to support an extended stay

It is expected that the scholar’s home institution will continue to pay the scholar’s academic salary during the duration of the fellowship.

The Princeton Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and selected natural sciences, invites applications for the 2016-2019 Fellowship competition.

Eligibility

  • PhD degree requirements.

a) Candidates already holding the PhD degree at time of application:
You must have received your degree between January 1, 2014 and September 15, 2015.
b) Candidates who are ABD (all but dissertation) at time of application:
If you will not meet the September 15, 2015, deadline for receipt of PhD but are expected to have fulfilled all conditions for the degree, including defense and filing of dissertation, by June 15, 2016, you may still apply for a postdoctoral fellowship provided you have completed a substantial portion of the dissertation (approximately half).

Fellowships will be awarded to candidates at the beginning of their academic career. Candidates must have already demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and excellence in teaching.

 

  • US citizens and non-US citizens, regardless of race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability, are eligible to apply.
  • Fellows must reside in or near Princeton during the academic year of their fellowship term in order that they can attend weekly seminars and other events on campus.

Worth:

  • Four three-year Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded this year.
  • The stipend for each of the three years of the fellowship will be approximately $82,000.
  • In addition, fellows are provided with a shared office, a personal computer, a research account of $5,000 a year, access to university grants, benefits and other resources.

Fellows are expected to reside in or near Princeton during the academic year in order to attend weekly seminars and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Society.

This annual Prize, promoted by the Financial Times Limited (“FT”) and McKinsey & Company, Inc. (“McKinsey”), aims to discover, support and promote promising young authors of the business books of the future.
The Prize – named after Brendan Bracken and Marvin Bower, architects of, respectively, the modern FT and McKinsey- will be awarded to the best proposal for a book about the challenges and opportunities of growth by an author aged under 35.
In the spirit of the FT and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award, the proposed book should aim to provide a compelling and enjoyable insight into future trends in business, economics, finance or management.
Eligibility
  • Each proposal must be an unpublished, original work in the English language, not previously submitted for the Prize or to a publisher as a proposal for publication. Only one submission from each author will be considered.
  • There are no restrictions of gender or nationality but the authors must be under 35 years of age on November 17th,2015.
  • Entries will be accepted from authors who have had books published before.
  • The proposal should take the form of an essay or article of no more than 5,000 words that conveys the argument, scope and style of a proposed full-length business book and includes a description of the structure of the proposed work.

Prize:

  • The winner will receive an award of £15,000, intended to fuel further research leading to publication of a full-length work. Subject to clause 8 of the Conditions of Entry below, an edited version of the winning proposal may be published in the Financial Times newspaper and/or on FT.com.
  • The winner and any selected runners-up will be announced at the Business Book of the Year award dinner in New York currently scheduled for November 17th, 2015.
