African Leadership Center – Leadership and Society Course -Apply Now

The African Leadership Centre (ALC) invites applications from scholars and practitioners from the Southern Africa region to attend a 10-day training course on Leadership and Society.

This course is convened by the African Leadership Centre in partnership with King’s College London, with funding provided by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA).

The ALC aims to build a new community of leaders for development, peace and security in Africa. The idea of an African Leadership Centre was conceived to generate innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced on the African continent, and to facilitate the participation of a new community of leaders in national, regional and international efforts to achieve transformative change in their communities, countries and the continent.

Leadership and Society Course

This course will explore the mutually reinforcing links between Leadership and Society especially in the developing world at various national, regional and continental strata. The Leadership and Society course has been conceived against the background of the immense significance of leadership processes and outcomes in security and development efforts in Africa and the developing world.

By the end of the course, participants will have undergone an intensive ten day period of training, and will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to understand the complexities of leadership and identify key leadership themes, relating them to particular contexts;
  • Ability to identify critical leadership processes and questions in developing countries and draw lessons for their specicic contexts;
  • An understanding of contemporary challenges facing young Africans (particularly women) in positions of political and societal leadership;
  • Ability to connect formal knowledge about leadership with their lived experiences; and
  • Ability to identify essential tools for practicing evidence-based leadership

 

The ALC utilizes a training methodology that combines rigorous academic training with a mentoring element. As part of the course, participants can expect to benefit from sessions on Personal Mastery and Effective Communication.

TO APPLY

Applications are invited from candidates from (and based in) the Southern Africa region. Funding to attend this course is available only to successful candidates from Southern Africa, and funding will be provided to cover tuition, modest subsistence during the course, and all travel expenses related to the programme.

There will be 30 positions open and available for candidates from the Southern African region.

Candidates applying for funding will undergo a rigorous selection process, which may include phone interviews.

Funded applicants will be required to attach the following documents:

  • A one-page application letter detailing your relevant experience and qualifications;
  • A supporting statement detailing why you think that this course is important for your future career plans (not longer than 2,000 words);
  • 2 letters of recommendation (to be received by email directly from the referees, by the deadline of 17:00 hrs, Saturday September 7th, 2013);
  • A recent Curriculum Vitae; andA sample of your written work (maximum 5,000 words) with a one page abstract.
