Tekano, meaning “equality” in Sesotho, is a non-profit organisation established largely to drive the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in South Africa. This initiative could be funded for as long as 20 years by The Atlantic Philanthropies as part of their creation of an interconnected fellowship programme on five continents. The programme will develop progressive leadership to tackle the deep social and economic inequities that characterise SouthAfrica and impact on the health of our people.
Each year Tekano will select 30 Atlantic Fellows to participate in a structured learning
programme that is inter-disciplinary and focused on consolidating leadership for change.
Fellows will be exposed to social and health injustices and their causes, as well as to innovative multi-sector efforts to address health inequity in South Africa and beyond.
They will use this exposure to stimulate debate and discussion, reflect on what they learn and relate critical theory, analysis and concepts to their experiences.
Requirements:
- Tekano seeks to recruit young and mid-career social change advocates, irrespective of citizenship, who are younger than 45 years of age and residing and working in South Africa.
- Tekano invites applications both from individuals and from groups of four to five people who are already working together on a health equity issue and are preferably working for different organisations
- Participants will be expected to:
• Have full support from their employer to participate in the programme.
• Commit to attending the entire course which comprises six modules that run over a
period of one year :
o Module 1: 7 to 11 September 2017
o Module 2: 9 to 13 November 2017
o Module 3: 25 to 29 January 2018
o Module 4: 15 to 19 March 2018
o Module 5 : 24 to 28 May 2018
o Module 6 : 2 to 6 August 2018.
• Participate in fellowship activities between modules including online learning, advocacy
activities and group projects, etc.
• Remain engaged with the Atlantic Fellows Programme beyond the fellowship year as an
active alumni member.
Benefits:
- There are no costs to be paid by successful applicants to attend the fellowship programme.
- All travel, accommodation and incidental expenses will be covered by Tekano.

CHECKLIST OF DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED:
- Application form (online preferably but emailed submissions will also be accepted).
- Curriculum vitae (not longer than four pages).
- Good quality electronic colour photo (portrait).
- Sample of your best publication or article published in the last five years (if published); a piece of writing you alone wrote; or an example of an advocacy action you have played a leadership role in (for example, a YouTube video or a media report on the action).

Letter of in-principle support from employer or leader in organisation in which you volunteer. ( This should be from your immediate supervisor or whoever has authority todecide that you can take time out for the fellowship and that you can apply lessonslearnt to your own workplace.)

Two letters of reference.

A brief application video in which you motivate why you are keen to gain a fellowshipand what you hope the value would be for your field of work.
Timeline:
- Space is limited and the deadline for applications is Tuesday 16 May 2017.
- You will not be considered for the fellowship unless all required documents and the video have been submitted.
- All applicants will be informed about the status of their application via email no later than 30 June 2017
