Call for participants: First Francophone African Regional Youth Forum on World Heritage
The first Francophone African World Heritage Youth Forum will take place from 26 April to 5 May 2017 in Burkina Faso at the Ruins of Loropéni World Heritage site. The principal objectives are to increase awareness among French-speaking African youth on issues related to the protection and preservation of World Heritage and to create a sustainable platform that will enhance the participation of young people in the field of the protection of World Heritage in Africa.
This initiative, which specifically targets French-speaking youth, is a follow-up to the first Anglophone African Regional Youth Forum on World Heritage organized in 2016 on the Robben Island World Heritage site in South Africa.
Requirements:
- Organized jointly by the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), the Government of Burkina Faso and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, this event will bring together some 30 African participants, between 20 and 28 years old, selected according to criteria set out in the applications form.

DATE: 30th April – 5th May 2018 VENUE: Island of Mozambique World Heritage Site, Moz In collaboration with UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique, the African World Heritage Fund is organising the Third Regional Youth Forum on World Heritage in Africa. The Forum, which follows the gathering in 2016 for English-speaking countries in Robben Island (South Africa) and the Francophone one in 2017 at Loropeni Ruins (Burkina Faso), will address the African Lusophone Youth. The four-day Forum (30 April-3 May) will consist of fieldwork on the interpretation of the Island of Mozambique World Heritage Site and will conclude with a one-day Seminar (4 May) and the official celebration of the African World Heritage Day (5 May). Aims and objectives This forum will promote increased participation of African youth and raise their sense of ownership, stewardship and accountability for World Heritage protection and promotion. The forum will seek to: a) Mobilise young people in World Heritage conservation and sustainable development efforts in the region and create a platform for harnessing the creativity of youth while providing opportunities for them to work together and to build networks; b) Raise youth awareness and appreciation of issues and threats facing current conservation efforts through a better understanding of the World Heritage Convention and the strategic guidelines for its implementation; c) Improve the legibility of the Island of Mozambique by reflecting on possible visit itineraries involving interactions with groups and individuals of the local communities; d) Raise the youth’s capacity to develop site conservation and promotion in their own countries, taking into account present day environmental issues and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals; e) Promote inter-generational and multidisciplinary dialogue and sharing of knowledge amongst youth, experts and specialists as regards the preservation and promotion of cultural and natural heritage. Structure of the Forum a) Oral presentations by heritage and youth specialists and also by young participants on heritage related issues in their own countries. Presentations will also include the feedback and follow up initiatives from the participants who attended the previews Fora. b) Hands-on/practical activities that provide skills for heritage preservation and promotion. c) Guided group visits to the Island of Mozambique World Heritage site as part of the practical fieldwork to improve the understanding and promotion of the site with the involvement of local communities. d) Group discussions and workshops to draw up the results and the final document of the Forum (to be presented during the Celebration of African World Heritage Day on 5th May). Participants Eighteen (18) African participants will be selected for the forum matching the following profile: a) Aged from 18-28 years old; b) Acquired minimum a post-secondary certified training and qualifications (Bachelor equivalent) with above average performance; c) Fluent in Portuguese. Ability to communicate in one of the other official African Union languages ( Swahili, Arabic, English or French) would be an advantage; d) Motivated, active and driven individuals interested in engaging in a World Heritage network of African youth, and eager to implement the outcomes of the forum in their home countries; The project is open to participants from all African countries.
