The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program of the Social Science Research Council in New York is pleased to announce the following research and training opportunity for early to mid-stage doctoral students within the U.S. and select countries in eastern and southern Africa:

Mobility, Empowerment and Precarity in African Migration

Selected fellows will work with faculty research directors Loren Landau (Political Science and Sociology, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) and Stephen Lubkemann (Anthropology and International Affairs, George Washington University) to enhance their dissertation research plans within this area of study through participation in two workshops: * The Spring Workshop will be held May 19-24, 2013 in Washington, DC * The Fall Workshop will be held September 25-29, 2013 on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Fellows attend workshops in the spring and fall of the fellowship cycle, which provide a framework for dissertation research and guide dissertation research plans. In the summer months between workshops, DPDF fellows carry out exploratory field research on their topics to evaluate issues of feasibility and methods of investigation. The DPDF program covers necessary costs for workshop participation and up to $5,000 for summer research. Fellows’ attendance at both workshops is mandatory.

ELIGIBILITY

The “Mobility, Empowerment and Precarity in African Migration” research field is open to 1st year doctoral students at universities within the following countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
