Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age. Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.
Each year, there is an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24.
Requirements
- Entrants must submit a portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship.
- The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.
- There is no fee for entry.

- Canon provides a choice of equipment to the winner
- World Press Photo automatically accepts the winner into its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam.
- Reportage by Getty Images adds the winner to their on line Emerging Talent group.
- Save the Children offers one of the finalists an all expenses paid assignment.
- This is a significant prize for any photographer and continues with the support of The Sunday Times Magazine & Canon.
This Scholarship is open to photojournalism students on fulltime courses or recent graduates
It is also applicable to photographers of 24 years old and under
Entry Criteria:
- A completed Entry Form
- A portfolio of 12 low resolution digital photographs, either a photo essay or individual photos. Include a project synopsis ( Please follow the instructions on the website carefully) include a caption for each image in the metadata with your name and contact details
- A detailed written proposal of your chosen assignment should you win.It should be noted that this written section id considered extremely important.
- The judges will need to be impressed by your ability to produce a convincing assignment proposal as well as your photography skills
