Home Algeria Apply to become a Youth Delegate to the United Nations – 2015 UN Youth Delegate Programme

Whether your country has an existing Youth Delegate Programme or you will have to convince your government on the importance of having a youth representative in its delegation to the UN General Assembly, advocate and apply to participate in decision-making of the United Nations.

Participation in decision-making is one of the key priority areas of the United Nations agenda on youth. One form of youth participation at the United Nations is through the inclusion of youth delegates in a country’s official delegation to the United Nations General Assembly and various functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

The youth delegate programme is coordinated by the Focal Point on Youth at the global level, but it is the responsibility of the Member States to establish a youth delegate programme at the national level, and to decide who will represent the young people of their country.

The roles of a youth representative varies from country to country, but normally includes providing input to their delegation on issues related to youth and participate in their delegation’s general work through attending meetings and informal negotiations.

The United Nations Youth Delegate Programme:

Programme aims to:
• Enhance awareness of the global situation of youth and to increase recognition of their rights and aspirations;
• Promote national youth policies, programmes and coordinating mechanisms as integral parts of social
and economic development, in cooperation with both governmental and non-governmental organizations;
• Strengthen the participation of youth in decision-making processes at all levels in order to increase
their contribution to national development and international cooperation;
• Facilitate the coordination of the UN system’s youth-related activities by leading the Inter-Agency
Network on Youth Development.
How to Apply:

Determine if  your country has an existing Youth Delegate Programme

  • Check the list of youth delegates of previous years.

If your country does not have a programme in place to select a youth delegate, your task will be two-fold:

  • First, you have to convince your country on the importance of having a youth representative in its delegation to the UN General Assembly.
  • And secondly, once they’ve established the position, you will have to initiate a selection process.

Benefits

  • Youth delegates can participate in several intergovernmental meetings at the United Nations.
  • Most official youth delegates participate in the General Assembly, but some also attend functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

I am a kenyan youth from the county of Mandera and I want to apply to become a youth delegate at the United nations assembly . Where I come from the county of Mandera there is alot of problems first my county is leading in child mortality rate in the country and secondly there is massive radicalisation of youth and they join terror organisations and if given a chance to be attending the United nations assembly as the delegate I will want to advocate for the youth of Kenya thank you.

Bonjour,
Au Bénin, -l’informel est très développé et très peu de petites entreprises survivent au delà de 3 ans;
– le taux d’analphabétisme est très élévé et les principaux cibles sont les femmes en milieu rural;

I am a youth from kitui county and i have been at the forefront in the fight for the rights our community,as you know Kitui is one of the county with vast amount of minerals and i am talking to youths to participate in the formulation of the measures and policies to ensure they are not punitive and are up to the international standards.
The other thing i am starting projects like irrigation farming to ensure youths are busy and the dont engage on crimes like joining the Alshabab due to lack of employment

I am NGU Frankline a Cameroonian and i want to be a youth delegate. I am interested in this program due to the rate at which youths are confused in my country and community. Due to lack of jobs and poor educational system youths of my community have engaged themselves in high capacity of drinking and smoking and arm robbery. I want to be a voice in my community. What do i need to do to make this happen?

My name is Natasha Mosongo and i am very interested in becoming a U.N Youth delegate for Kenya. First and foremost, i am very passionate about being in a position to enable the much needed changes in society. For example, there is a huge number of street children in Kenya that are living below the universal standards and need someone like me to be vocal about it with the hopes of inspiring and restoring their human dignity.
